Standard Operating Procedures

Standard operating procedures (SOP’s) are an important part of the daily processes involved in all dental practice. They are becoming more widely used within the practice setting.

Standard Operating Procedures

Although the larger individual policy documents provide an overview of a specified subject, a standard operating procedure gives a more detailed explanation or guide for staff to ensure processes are being carried out effectively.

An SOP is defined as a prescribed procedure to be followed routinely, it is the ‘how to’ guide that should be followed by staff members.

A protocol can be developed by the practice or general manager which should be tailored to the dental practice. The protocol is a step by step instruction on when and how processes should be carried out, who is authorised to do so and simple usage and maintenance instruction where applicable.
